Boys high school basketball teams learn tourney seeds, opponents

The days of surprises are all but done since the Martin RPI rankings took over the seeding for Ohio High School basketball teams.

It might be the only thing that explains the logic of John Glenn earning a No. 3 seed in the Division IV East District behind Cambridge, which earned the No. 2 seed despite more losses and a loss to the Muskies at the Catfish Classic at the Bobcats' own Gene Ford Gymnasium.
Chance are good that seeding will be decided on the court, as the Muskies chose the Bobcats' bracket when draws commenced on Feb. 15.
Here is a closer look at the draws for area teams:
Division III
In the East District, No. 4 Tri-Valley (11-10) and No. 5 Zanesville (10-10) will clash in the first-round game at 7 p.m. on Feb. 24 in Dresden for a berth in the semifinals on Feb. 28 against New Philadelphia.
That East bracket winner will face the lower bracket Southeast District winner at 6:15 p.m. on March 4 in at the Ohio Convocation Center with the winner advancing to the regional.
Steubenville (18-1) earned the top seed in the East and found itself in a bracket with No. 3 Dover (13-9) for a one-game district semifinal at 8:15 p.m. on March 4. The winner gets the other regional bid.
Sheridan (12-8) earned the No. 6 seed among eight teams in the Southeast, where it is in the lower bracket and travels to play No. 3 Chillicothe (14-5) for a first-round game.
The winner gets either No. 2 Jackson (17-3) or No. 7 Hillsboro (6-15) at 8 p.m. on Feb. 27 in the semifinals at The Convo; that bracket winner gets either Dover or Steubenville at 8:15 p.m. on March 4.
The Zanesville/Tri-Valley bracket winner plays the top Southeast bracket winner, featuring No. 1 Washington Court House Miami Trace (16-2), No. 4 Marietta (18-3), No. 5 Vincent Warren (11-8) and No. 8 Athens (7-14), at 6:15 p.m. on March 4.
The regional will be held at Ohio Dominican University.
Division IV
To no one's surprise, defending state champion Maysville (20-1) is the No. 1 seed in a strong East District, where two bracket winners advance to the regional at the OU-Eastern ECO Center.
Maysville is in the top bracket with No. 4 Lisbon Beaver Local and No. 5 Carrollton, which took a first-round bye and faces the Beaver Local-Minerva winner at 7 p.m. on March 3 for a final berth.
Maysville hosts No. 14 seed West Holmes at 7 p.m. on Feb. 27, with the winner getting either No. 9 East Liverpool or No. 11 Richmond Edison at 7 p.m. on March 3. Maysville hosts with a win against the Knights.
The finals are set for 7 p.m. on March 6 at a site to be determined.
In the other bracket, John Glenn (19-1) hosts No. 13 Morgan (5-16) and No. 10 Philo (10-10) travels to play No. 7 Claymont at 7 p.m. on Feb. 27, with the two winners playing at 7 p.m. on March 3 for a final berth.
The other half of the bracket saw No. 6 Indian Valley (11-9), with two straight district final appearances, take a first-round bye and plays either Cambridge (17-3) or No. 12 Wintersville Indian Creek (6-14) in the semifinals.
A potential John Glenn-Cambridge final would be at 7 p.m. on March 6 at a neutral site.
The two East winners will play in an ECO Center regional semifinal; the Southeast winners play at The Convo. The finals are to be determined.
Division V
Surging West Muskingum (15-5) earned the No. 2 seed among 17 teams behind St. Clairsville (14-6), where two bracket winners advance to the regional.
West, coming off a 70-68 loss at Maysville, welcomes No. 17 Navarre Fairless (3-19) to Falls Township for a pigtail game at 7 p.m. on Feb. 24, with the winner playing No. 16 Sandy Valley on 7 p.m. on Feb. 28 at the higher seed's site.
Below them, No. 10 Barnesville gets a home game with No. 12 Cadiz Harrison Central for the other semifinal berth at 7 p.m. on March 4 at a site to be determined.
In the bottom half of the bracket, No. 8 Ridgewood (9-11) travels to No. 5 Belmont Union Local (10-11), with the winner getting either No. 4 Fort Frye or No. 9 Meadowbrook in the semifinals at 7 p.m. on March 4.
The two semifinal winners will play for a regional berth at 7 p.m. on March 7 at a neutral site.
In other other bracket, No. 6 Coshocton (10-11) hosts No. 11 River View at 7 p.m. on Feb. 28 for a semifinal bid against either No. 3 Martins Ferry or No. 14 Garaway at 7 p.m. on March 4.
St. Clairsville is in the upper half with No. 7 Zoarville Tuscarawas Valley (9-10), No. 13 Rayland Buckeye Local (6-16) and No. 15 Bellaire (3-17).
Both bracket finals are set for 7 p.m. on March 7 at a neutral site.
In the Southeast, New Lexington (6-16) was seeded 12th of 12 teams and travels to No. 5 Fairfield Union (13-6) at 7 p.m. on Feb. 23, with the winner playing either No. 4 Waverly (11-9) or No. 13 Cheshire River Valley (7-13) for a final berth at 3:45 p.m. on March 1 at The Convo.
Circleville (18-2), Unioto (16-3) and Washington Court House (12-8) are the top two seeds. Two bracket winners advance to the regional.
The two East winners will play at the regional at Zanesville's Winland Memorial Gymnasium, with the two Southeast winners will play at The Convo.
Division VI
Crooksville is seeded ninth of nine teams and travels to No. 8 Sarahsville Shenandoah at 7 p.m. on Feb. 24 for a chance to play at top-seeded Berlin Hiland for a semifinal berth three days later.
Below them, No. 4 Caldwell hosts No. 7 Newcomerstown for the other semifinal bid. The finals are at 7 p.m. on March 6.
The semifinals are set for 7 p.m. on March 3.
Division VII
Rosecrans (15-5) earned the No. 2 seed behind New Matamoras Frontier (12-5) in the East and hosts No. 5 Strasburg at 7 p.m. on Feb. 27 for a semifinal bid.
Above them, No. 4 Malvern (12-7) hosts No. 9 Tuscarawas Central Catholic (4-16) for a chance to play Steubenville Catholic Central (9-11), the No. 6 seed, at 7 p.m. on Feb. 27.
Frontier hosts No. 8 Shadyside (6-15) and No. 3 Hannibal River (12-6) welcomes No. 7 Bowerston Conotton Valley (9-11) in the bottom half.
The semifinals are at 7 p.m. on March 3 at a neutral site, with the finals set for 7 p.m. on March 6.
