Former Lady Vols guard Ruby Whitehorn transfers to Arizona State after dismissal

Former Lady Vols basketball guard Ruby Whitehorn has transferred to Arizona State, she announced Feb. 20.

Whitehorn was dismissed from the team on Nov. 2 after facing two legal issues in a three-month span. The 6-foot guard transferred to Tennessee ahead of coach Kim Caldwell's first season and played for the Lady Vols for one season before her suspension and subsequent dismissal.

Whitehorn posted several photos of her in practice at Arizona State, though she won't be eligible to play in games until the 2026-27 season. Molly Miller has led the Sun Devils to a 21-7 record in her first season as coach.

"I'm here to help young people," Miller told On3.com. "Our culture gives Ruby an opportunity to grow and I believe she can be the best version of herself in this environment."

Whitehorn was dismissed after she was charged with a misdemeanor for simple possession after a traffic stop, which occurred less than two months after she was reinstated from a lengthy suspension following a previous arrest and judicial diversion.

Whitehorn was indefinitely suspended after she was arrested Aug. 8 on two felony charges of aggravated burglary and domestic assault.

Whitehorn later pleaded guilty during a preliminary hearing on Sept. 5 to two misdemeanors – vandalism and aggravated criminal trespass – under a commonly offered agreement that will erase the convictions from her record if she meets the requirements of the deal. She was reinstated to the team by Caldwell the week of Sept. 8.

"It is my responsibility to protect the high standards of this historic program," Caldwell said in a school release on Nov. 2. "In light of recent events, Ruby has been unable to reflect those standards, and I have made the difficult decision to dismiss her from our team. I love Ruby and will always be rooting for her, but my priority is to uphold the respected reputation of the Lady Vols."

Whitehorn, who transferred to Tennessee from Clemson prior to the 2024-25 season, was expected to be a key player for the Lady Vols again after averaging 11.6 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists on their run to the Sweet 16 last season.
