On Tuesday, February 24, Quinn and Jack appeared for a virtual interview on "Good Morning America" to address their victory at the Winter Olympics ice hockey games. During the interview, the brothers were asked about their team's State of the Union invite from Trump.
"I don't know how much we're allowed to say, but yes. Yeah, we're excited to go. Something you don't get to do – I don't know what today is – every Tuesday. But yeah, it's going to be special for us," Quinn replied. He also addressed the female hockey team drama, adding:
"But I'm glad you mentioned the women's team again. You know, we're really happy for them. Obviously, a lot is going on on social media surrounding our team and their team."
Quinn, per the interview shared on YouTube, stressed that the male hockey team spent a considerable amount of time training with the female team and had no bad blood with them. His brother echoed similar sentiments in a separate interview.
Jack Hughes Slams The Female Hockey Drama As Unnecessary Negativity

Just as Quinn did not condemn Trump for poking fun at the female hockey team, neither did his brother. Jack shared his thoughts about the online drama while speaking with The Daily Mail, implying he did not believe the female players rejected Trump's invite out of anger.
"They've got busy schedules, too. Everyone is giving us backlash for all the social media stuff today," Jack said. He noted that the backlash was unnecessary, stressing, "People are so negative out there, and they are just trying to find a reason to put people down and make something out of almost nothing."
Similar to Quinn's words, Jack claimed that the male hockey team did not have a bad relationship with their female counterparts. He reiterated that people were being "so negative about things" without knowing how much the male hockey team players support the female athletes.

Trump joked that he would "probably be impeached" if he didn't invite the Team USA women to the State of the Union. When the invite finally arrived, the female team turned down the offer, citing "the timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments."
On the other hand, Jack couldn't wait to meet Trump in person, telling the outlet: "Yeah, we're excited. Everything is so political. We're athletes. We're so proud to represent the US." He added that no matter what views people might have, the male hockey team was happy to join the President at the White House.

Many weighed in on the Hughes siblings' reaction to Trump's joke on X after Curtis Houck, the managing editor at NewsBusters, shared a clip of their joint interview. Critics slammed the brothers for failing to see a problem with the President's words, labeling them "cowards."
"Too bad he didn't condemn the President for mocking the women's team. They have all sullied their win and images," someone claimed. Another agreed, noting the Team USA men's hockey team was "a huge disappointment." A third claimed they lost all respect for the Hughes brothers following their response.
A fellow critic called BS on the Hughes siblings' response, stressing that actions speak louder than words. "You can say you care about their team, but you laughed at them, and when you had the chance to actually PROVE you care, you still chose to go visit with that POS," the X user wrote.

Quinn and Jack weren't the only ones on the hot seat over Trump's female hockey team joke, as their mom, Ellen Hughes, was also asked to share her thoughts on the controversy. Ellen was asked about her response to the President's words on the TODAY show.
Ellen, who is also a player development consultant for Team USA women's hockey, did not condemn Trump like her children. Instead, she stressed that "at the end of the day, it's just about the country," and pushed for unity rather than division between the men's and women's hockey teams.
Similar to Quinn and Jack's claims of an amicable relationship between the hockey teams, Ellen declared that there was "camaraderie" and "synergy." She noted that both sides happily supported each other during the games and were not concerned about politics.
Will Donald Trump applaud the Hughes siblings for not condemning his actions?
