Eagles interview Second-Team All-SEC offensive tackle at NFL Combine

You can never have too many offensive linemen. Not in today's NFL. Not when pass rushers are bigger, faster, and deeper than ever. The smart franchises understand this, including the Philadelphia Eagles. They draft tackles before they need tackles, and so often, they develop them quietly.

Jeff Stoutland often let his young talent marinate behind veterans instead of throwing them into the fire too early. The Eagles have built part of their identity on that philosophy. Dominance in the trenches isn't accidental in Philadelphia. It's intentional. That attitude is expected to continue under new OL coach Chris Kuper.

That brings us to another Georgia Bulldog entering the conversation. The Philadelphia Eagles met with Monroe Freeling at the NFL Scouting Combine. At this point, you almost have no choice but to respect the continuing pipeline.

Monroe Freeling is a nice fit for the Eagles' offensive line.

Now, let's talk about credentials. Freeling arrives with more than his share. He's a Second-Team All-SEC selection. He has battled elite competition week in and week out. You don't earn postseason recognition in that conference without earning it.

He has the frame teams look for on the edge. The raw ingredients of an NFL starter are evident. If taken by Philadelphia, however, he'd more than likely sit and learn for a spell.

Projecting anyone as the successor to Lane Johnson is unfair. The future Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee isn't just a great tackle. He's a franchise cornerstone and one of the best to ever do it in Philadelphia. Still, succession planning is part of responsible roster building. Johnson won't play forever. He may not play past this season.

Philadelphia has consistently shown they prefer to develop offensive linemen before they're forced to start them. That's where Freeling becomes intriguing. Meeting with him doesn't guarantee anything. It does, however, signal foresight.
