Late last month, 41-year-old Hagen Lawrence Roberts was found guilty of first-degree murder and felony stabbing in the Oct. 8, 2020, death of Cynthia Capps, 63.

According to a City of Virginia Beach press release, in October 2020, police responded to Capps’ home after her husband called 911 to report his wife missing after he had taken a shower.

Capps’ husband searched for her and only found a “single drop of blood on the kitchen floor.”

Rented a room to the suspect

Upon investigation, police learned the couple had rented a room out to Roberts. Authorities tried to enter Roberts’ room, but it was locked. This prompted a force entry.

Cops found Roberts lying on the bed, seemingly wet from taking a shower. He had a cut on his right hand, which had been wrapped in a black bandana.

Further search of the property found bloodstains in the backyard and on a toolbox.

Investigators opened the toolbox and find Capps’ body stuffed inside.

Head, face and neck targeted

An autopsy showed she had been “stabbed over 90 times in the head, face and neck.”

Police also found bloodstained clothing in the trash can and more bloodstains throughout the house.

A black folding knife with a broken tip covered in dried blood was found in Hagens’ room. DNA of both Capps and Roberts was found on the knife, the discarded clothing, and the bloodstains in the home.

A metal shard that looked like the tip of a knife was removed from Capps’ skull during autopsy.

Roberts was sentenced to life plus five years in prison.
