The 6-foot-3, 195-pound winger is on the final year of his two-year, $2-million contract. He will be a free agent this summer.
Vegas is currently in first place in the Pacific Division with 70 points. Nashville is five points out of the final wild card spot for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Smith came to UND from the Manitoba Junior Hockey League with
minimal recruiting interest.
He played four years, tallying 24 goals and 51 points in 137 games for the Fighting Hawks.
After his senior season, Smith signed with Nashville as an undrafted free agent.
He is now in his sixth NHL season. All have come with Nashville.
Smith has played in 271 NHL regular-season games, scoring 23 goals and tallying 62 points.
Smith is set to become the first former UND player to suit up for the Vegas Golden Knights, an expansion team in 2017.
