Former Spartan defenseman traded ahead of NHL trade deadline
· Yahoo Sports
The NHL trade deadline is at 3 p.m. ET on Friday afternoon, and teams across the league are looking to shore up their roster for potential playoff pushes, or retooling for the upcoming seasons. One former Spartan was at the center of one of these deadline deals, getting dealt to a team that has the NHL playoffs in their sights.
After signing with the Florida Panthers this offseason, Jeff Petry has been moved to the Minnesota Wild in return for a seventh round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.

Petry, a Spartan defenseman from 2007-2010, has had a 15-year NHL career full of success, and will look to add onto that with the Wild.

Following the trade, his Panthers head coach Paul Maurice had nothing but good things to say about him:
“He was a real good teammate, we had a whole bunch of nights where he was playing with a different partner, but he competed for us…I think he’s a good veteran guy who signed with us with the hopes that we'd be able to continue what we had going here…looks like we're in a tougher spot…credit to Bill Zito and the commitment he made to that player to give him a little bit more of a sheer chance to get some playoff hockey later in his career. So it was the right thing to do.”
