On Thursday, March 5, Carlisle and Bishop Heelan faced off in the Class 4A semifinal of the Iowa high school girls state basketball tournament. The Crusaders entered the game with an undefeated record, and Melina Snoozy just scored 37 points in their quarterfinal game win – setting a Class 4A state tournament single-game record.
Her point total, though, proved to be more of a placeholder.
Just over two days after Snoozy broke the record, Carlisle senior Macy Comito broke it again. She piled on 42 points as the Wildcats eased past the Crusaders, 73-60, and into Saturday's state championship game.
“To have a player like her get that, I can’t think of anybody more deserving,” said Carlisle coach Justin Flaws. “The work that she puts in, I’m sure somebody out there matches her, but I don’t know who it is. You literally have to lock the doors, put the hoops up and hide the basketballs to get her out of the gym.”
Comito may have finished with an astounding point total next to her name, but this game began with each team going on a run of its own to start.
The Wildcats jumped out to a five-point lead in the first minute and change of the game. The Crusaders responded by scoring six-straight points of their own to take the lead. Carlisle scored, Bishop Heelan scored; Comito scored eight-straight points, Trishelle Miller and Snoozy answered with three points in a row.
But then, momentum flipped in the Wildcats' favor.
Carlisle piled on the points, extending their lead to 16 with under three minutes left in the second. The Wildcats headed to the locker room up, 33-22, and most of those points off Comito’s hand, with the Iowa State signee racking up 24 points in the first half alone.
Coming out after halftime, Bishop Heelan tried to get something going. Carlisle showed no signs of slowing down, though, and the Wildcats built their lead to 22 points (63-41) in the opening minutes of the fourth.
There was never a moment when the Crusaders stopped trying to close the gap, but Bishop Heelan also could not find a way to stop Comito. Snoozy even scored 27 points for her team, but it wasn’t enough.
“Pray,” Flaws said when asked how they prepared to guard Snoozy. “There’s been two people in my coaching career that have given me nightmares about writing a scouting report. Bowen Born was one of them; he played for Norwalk. And then Snoozy’s the other.”
The Wildcats (25-1) advance to the Class 4A championship game and will have a chance to claim the program’s first-ever girls basketball title. Carlisle is set to play Dallas Center-Grimes on Saturday, March 7, at 2:30 p.m.

“I’m just happy, I’m happy for the community,” Flaws said. “The support, you saw it out there. The student section, all the fans, the small town of Carlisle, they’re all here, and it’s awesome for them. These girls put in all the work, and I’m just so proud of them.”
