MAN, 62, DIES AFTER CRASH KNOCKS DOWN POLE
A 62-year-old man died on Friday after a collision in North York led to a utility pole falling on the victim.
Toronto Police said officers responded to a call at approximately 6:40 p.m. for a fail to remain collision in the Steeles Ave. W. and Gerry Fitzgerald Dr., just west of Dufferin St.
According to police, a 19-year-old woman was driving a Volkswagen Tiguan east on Steeles Ave. and an unknown male was behind the wheel of an Acura MDX driving west on Steeles Ave.
The woman attempted to make a left turn at the intersection when the Acura driver allegedly disobeyed a red light and was travelling at a high rate of speed, causing a collision within the intersection.
Police said the male motorist then lost control of the Acura and struck a utility pole on the northwest corner of the intersection. The pole then fell onto a male pedestrian and killed him.
The driver of the Acura got out of his vehicle and fled the area on foot, cops said.
Investigators are looking for the male driver who is described as having a thin build and wearing a grey or blue tracksuit and a black backpack.
The investigation is ongoing by members of Traffic Services, police said. Any residents, businesses, and drivers, who may have security or dash cam footage of the area or incident, is asked to contact investigators.
