Peel Regional Police have charged a Brampton man in connection with a series of thefts from major retailers totalling $30,000 including 100 bricks of butter and 91 tubs of Ghee, the latter being clarified butter from India.

On Monday following a three-month-long investigation into retail theft and distribution, officers executed a search warrant at a Brampton residence and allegedly recovered the butter and Ghee, along with 300 bottles of alcohol.

As a result, Pintu Gohil, 48, has been arrested and charged with two counts of possession of property obtained by crime.

He was released from custody on an undertaking and will appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton on April 7.

Theft leads to higher prices, lost jobs

“Retail theft is not a victimless crime,” Peel Acting Deputy Chief Hubert Hiltz said in a statement.

“When businesses are targeted, the impact is felt across the community, from higher prices and lost jobs to reduced investment in our neighbourhoods. Peel Regional Police remains committed to working with businesses, residents and our partners to keep our communities safe and support a strong local economy.”

In 2025, nearly 7,500 retail thefts were reported to Peel Regional Police but since 2024-25, retail thefts have seen a 6% reduction.
