As the 2026 NFL free agency period continues to unfold, the Detroit Lions see their special teams captain, Grant Stuard, depart for the West Coast as he has signed a two-year deal worth up to $5.05 million with the Los Angeles Rams, according to NFL insider Aaron Wilson.

The move comes after Detroit declined to extend the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 2021 seventh-round linebacker, who signed a one-year, $1.7 million deal with the Lions last year.
Former #Lions special teams ace and linebacker Grant Stuard is signing w/ #Rams on a two year deal worth up to $5.05 million, per league source. Stuard @UHCougarFB has made impact with #Buccaneers#Colts and Detroit, now takes his high-intensity game to LA

In his lone season in Detroit, the Lions immediately had plans to use Stuard as a kick returner due to the league’s new dynamic kickoff. After a few weeks, the Lions opted to move him off that role and into other special teams roles. As a high-energy and maximum effort player, he tallied a team-high 375 special teams snaps and finished the year with 19 tackles in all 17 games played.
Losing Stuard will leave a pretty big special teams hole on the Lions’ roster and further complicates the linebacker depth with just Jack Campbell, Derrick Barnes, Malcolm Rodriguez, and Trevor Nowaske under contract for the 2026 season.
