Carrington insider reveals Man Utd worried about ‘fantastic’ INEOS signing who’s been ‘through hell’

Manchester United are reportedly concerned by the physical condition of Matthijs de Ligt, who has been enduring woeful times.

The Dutch defender has been out of action since picking up an injury during the 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace back in November.

The 26-year-old’s absence has been a blow for Man Utd, as he had been one of the club’s most consistent performers during the first months of the season.

Matthijs de Ligt has yet to recover from his back injury

The extent of De Ligt’s back injury was initially undermined, with then-MUFC boss Ruben Amorim passing it off as a small knock. And yet, four months have passed since the centre-back last took the field, and there haven’t been any signs of imminent return.

A few weeks back, Michael Carrick revealed that De Ligt has been making some improvements in his recovery path, but until this day, he hasn’t returned to group training.

In his latest update on the CentreDevils, reliable Man Utd insider, Sully, shed some light on the situation.

The journalist reveals that the player is still working in the gym as part of his rehabilitation program. However, his sources also mention internal concern over the defender who went ‘through hell’ in recent months.

De Ligt has supposedly been close to making a return on a few occasions, only to suffer a setback each time, which must have been an emotional rollercoaster for the player and those around him.

How Man Utd have been coping without De Ligt

Unfortunately for De Ligt, he has been struggling to remain fit in recent seasons, as injury problems have constantly derailed his momentum.

The good news for Man Utd is that they have enough depth and quality at the back to make up for the absence of the Netherlands international. Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez formed a wonderful centre-back pairing in Carrick’s first matches in charge.

The Argentine himself was ruled out with a fresh injury, but Leny Yoro has filled in admirably, while Ayden Heaven offers an alternative solution.

Nevertheless, Wes Brown insisted that the ‘fantastic’ De Ligt would eventually retain his starting spot once he regains his optimal physical condition. Man Utd fans will be hoping this will occur sooner rather than later.
