Well, that was much more like Scottie Scheffler, wasn’t it? A third round of five-under-par 67 saw the current world number one climb back inside the top 25 at The Players Championship.

Scheffler’s first two rounds at The Players Championship were both really hard work, and he did well to grind it out and make the cut in the end.

The 29-year-old struggled desperately with his driver, while his iron play was not up to scratch by his standards.

Scheffler’s swing was unrecognizable during the first two days at The Players and it’s fair to say that he looked completely lost out on the golf course.

However, Scheffler managed to turn things around on day three at The Players Championship.

The man from Dallas, Texas, shot a bogey-free round of 67 and he looked much more like his old self, albeit not quite at his very best.

Scottie Scheffler’s response when asked if he can still win The Players

At the time of writing, Scheffler is sitting seven shots adrift of the leader, Ludvig Aberg, who has only played seven holes of his third round.

So does the 20-time PGA Tour winner believe he can overcome that deficit on Sunday?

After his third round, Scheffler was asked by reporters whether he thinks he did enough to give himself at least an outside chance of winning this week.

Not unless it starts blowing like 30 miles an hour, Scheffler said, laughing.

He was then asked what changed on Saturday after the poor golf he played during the first two rounds at TPC Sawgrass.

I was a little sharper today than I was the first two days, Scheffler said.

I felt like I was swinging it better each day of the tournament. Today hit a few more fairways and was able to give myself a few more looks for birdie.

Much will depend on what score Aberg shoots on Saturday. If the leaders remain at around 10, 11 or even 12-under-par, Scheffler will still have an outside chance of winning on Sunday.

What Scottie Scheffler worked on with Randy Smith before day three at The Players

Scheffler was asked by journalists whether he worked on anything specific with his coach, Randy Smith, before he played his third round on Saturday.

I mean, I’m always just trying to get a feel for where my swing is at, the current world number one explained.

Whenever I can feel the clubhead, I’m in a pretty good spot.

If you ever see us practicing, that’s typically what I’m trying to — if I’m searching for something, that would be kind of what I’m searching for is the feel for the clubhead, and so that way I’m kind of able to see and create shots.

While Scheffler was much-improved on day three at The Players, he still didn’t look completely right.

He was ranked inside the top 35 in all of the key statistical categories on Saturday but his iron play was average at best.

Scheffler will be pleased that he drastically improved his driving on day three at Sawgrass, but he still has a lot of work to do if he is even to finish inside the top 10, let alone win the tournament.
