GVSU's Westra, Ulven, Diaz, Postma, Chapa brothers all earn All-American track honors

The Grand Valley State men's track and field team finished runner-up at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships on Saturday, March 14, in Virginia Beach.

The GVSU women were sixth overall. Pittsburg State won both titles.

There were several Holland-area athletes to earn All-American honors.

GVSU's Shelby Ulven (Zeeland East) finished fifth in the women's weight throw (19.83 meters, 65-0 3/4) to finish fifth and earn All-American honors.

Paige Westra (Zeeland East) also earned All-American honors, taking seventh in the shot put (15.52, 50-11).

GVSU's Alaina Diaz (Hudsonville) took sixth in the long jump (6.09 meters, 20-0 1/4) to earn All-American honors. She was also sixth in the 200 meters (23.77).

GVSU's Megan Postma (West Ottawa), Claire Neumann, Addison Washler and Cara Newman finished fifth in the distance medley relay to earn an All-American finish in 11:30.93.

In the men's 4x400, GVSU's Desmond Chapa (West Ottawa), Demarcus Chapa (West Ottawa), Trannon Aylor and Joshua Page finished fifth (3:10.75).

GVSU's Brandon Schirck was fourth in the weight throw (21.52 meters, 70-7 1/4 inches). Dolan Gonzalez was second in the pole vault (5.36, 17-7). Koby Fraaza was third in the 5K (13:49.98). Brooke Bowers was fourth in the women's pole vault (4.27, 14-0). Marcus Gelpi was second in the high jump (2.20, 7-2 1/2). Samuel Allen was sixth in the 800 (1:49.97).

GVSU's Owen Westerkamp, Joshua Page, Colin MacGregor and Flynn Pumpa took third in the distance medley (9:40.17).
