Lion baseball sweeps Washburn

Missouri Southern State University's baseball team completed a three-game sweep of the Washburn University Ichabods with a pair of wins Saturday at Warren Turner Field.

In Saturday’s Game 1, the teams combined for 32 runs, with the Lions coming out on top 17-15.

Washburn (8-15, 5-6) led 3-0 after the top of the second inning, but the Lions plated four runs in the bottom of the frame to earn their first lead.

The Ichabods answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third, but MSSU tied the game at 5 in the bottom of the inning.

Washburn scored three in the fourth and held the Lions to two runs in the bottom of the inning. The Ichabods took an 11-7 lead after the top of the fifth, but Southern’s bats exploded for five runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead at 12-11 going into the sixth.

Each team plated two runs in the sixth, but they were unable to put a run across in the seventh. The Lions extended their lead to 17-13 in the bottom of the eighth and held the Ichabods to two runs in the top of the ninth to claim the 17-15 win.

Blake Jones finished 3 for 5, including a solo home run. Jones logged five runs and three RBIs. Brayden Luikart was 3 for 5 with three RBIs and a run. Cy Darnell finished 2 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs, and Jacob Filip was 2 for 4 with three runs.

Carter Stover (2-1) earned the win for Southern. Marcus Young earned the save, giving up no runs and no hits.

In Game 2, the Lions homered four times — including three in the first inning — and logged a 7-5 win.

In the bottom of the first, Southern hitters Luikart and Will Doherty went back-to-back with solo homers, and two batters later Jones joined the home run derby with a bomb over the left field fence to log his second homer of the day and give the Lions a 3-0 lead.

Washburn’s Trenton Barry tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the second with a bases-loaded triple that plated Ian Luce, Garrett Springer and Brooks Richardson.

The Ichabods earned their only lead of the game in the top of the fourth when Springer hit a solo shot to left that made it a 4-3 game.

A Jason Lazo homer in the bottom of the frame tied the game at 4-4, and the Lions regained the lead at 5-4 off an Aiden Hinkle single that scored Will Potter. Hinkle later scored off a Luikart single to left that gave MSSU a 6-4 lead.

Darnell stretched the lead to 7-4 with a single in the bottom of the sixth that plated Potter.

Washburn scored once in the top of the ninth off a Levi Risenhoover single that brought Ian Luce home, but Southern held on for the 7-5 win.

Jones went 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI, Luikart was 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a run, and Darnell finished 2 for 4 with a run.

Walker Sweet got the win for MSSU after giving up four runs on eight hits. Sweet struck out four and walked two in five innings of work. Young recorded his second save of the day after giving up no runs on two hits, while striking out one in one inning of relief.

The Lions also won Friday's game 9-3.

The Lions (12-10, 7-5) host Newman University for a single game beginning at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Warren Turner Field.
