Detroit Pistons provide Isaiah Stewart injury update on calf strain

· Yahoo Sports

WASHINGTON D.C. – Detroit Pistons big man Isaiah Stewart will be re-evaluated in a week while nursing a left calf strain, the team announced Tuesday, March 17.

Stewart missed the road loss Sunday against the Toronto Raptors, and has been ruled out of the Tuesday night road game against the Washington Wizards. Coach J.B. Bickerstaff said Sunday the injury has been a nagging one, and the team won't rush him back with 15 games remaining in the regular season.

"It’s something that he’s been dealing with," Bickerstaff said. "It just had been kinda getting worse. He gutted it out last game and you could see he was favoring it and he was hobbling around a little bit late in his minutes. It’s something we’re going to take time with. Those are things you don’t want to mess around with. I can’t give you a timeline because we’ll always try to see how he responds. The most important thing for us is that he gets well, so we’ll take our time and make sure that he’s well."

Stewart is averaging 10 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game, a career-high. He's been a key cog in the Pistons' No. 2-ranked defense this season and once again is among the league's best rim protectors.

He won't qualify for an All-Defensive team, however, with his latest injury keeping him from meeting the 65-game threshold for awards eligibility. The Pistons will face the Wizards without him twice this week, and he also will miss Friday's home game against the Golden State Warriors.
