Matt Fitzpatrick wins Valspar Championship with clutch birdie putt

One week ago, Matt Fitzpatrick went to congratulate Cameron Young's wife and parents on his come-from-behind victory at the Players Championship that left the 31-year-old Englishman as a hard-luck loser. It was a classy move.

"My parents have raised me to be polite and, you know, and kind. Yeah, it all comes from my parents," Fitzpatrick said. "The biggest example would be, I won the 2022 U.S. Open, my dad ran past me and went to shake hands with Will Zalatoris, you know, to say, obviously, commiserations. I know Will has mentioned that before to me. So, yeah, it comes from my parents, they raised me to be that way."

A week after he let a two-stroke lead with two holes to go at the Players Championship slip away, Fitzpatrick survived the infamous Snake Pit at Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead Course, draining a 20-foot birdie putt at the last to shoot 68 and win the Valspar Championship on Sunday.

Fitzpatrick signed for an 11-under 273 total, one stroke better than David Lipsky. Fitzpatrick was the only player in the field that was bogey-free on the weekend. He was dominant with his iron play. Fitzpatrick ranked first in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green, second in SG: Approach, fourth in proximity.

“Over the last 12 months I've really seen a big improvement with Mark Blackburn on my approach play, and that was always something that I felt was lacking that didn't necessarily get me to the top of the game," Fitzpatrick said. "Since that improvement I feel like I've become more of a whole-rounded player, and you continue that and the more opportunities you give yourself with your irons, you hopefully are going to take some, take plenty one week and, you know, you walk away with a trophy."

Fitzpatrick also ranked first in scrambling, including 11-of-11 on the weekend. He holed a 30-foot birdie putt at 15 to reach 10 under and tie David Lipsky for the lead. Then canned the birdie at the last and pumped his fist. Lipsky birdied 14 to reach 10 under but couldn't get his lengthy birdie effort at 18 to drop.
