The Kansas City Chiefs are undergoing a transformation of their roster after missing the playoffs last season for the first time in the Patrick Mahomes era.

The run game has gotten significant juice, with Kenneth Walker signed, and the defense, while losing two star corners, can expect to be revamped as well, thanks to two first-round draft picks.

Andy Reid and Co. know last season was unacceptable, and they have made key moves to help freshen up the roster.

And for Sports Illustrated's Michael Fabiano, his favorite move of the entire offseason is Walker coming to the AFC West.

"I know running backs aren’t valued as much as they used to be (boy, do I miss those days), but I do like the Chiefs’ signing of Walker," Fabiano wrote. "The reigning Super Bowl MVP will share a backfield with another Super Bowl MVP, Patrick Mahomes, and he’ll also give coach Andy Reid a threat at the position that he hasn’t had since Kareem Hunt 1.0 in 2017.

"If Walker can avoid the injuries that dogged him for part of his time in Seattle, he’s an easy bet to post strong rushing totals and bring balance to the offense in ’26."

Walker could be difference-maker

If Walker can produce anything near what he did in the playoffs with the Seattle Seahawks, the Chiefs will again be among the Super Bowl favorites.

Last season, Mahomes had to throw the football all over the field due to a lack of a run game. He won't have to now.

In fact, you could make the case that the passing game could be secondary to the rushing attack led by Walker. Imagine that a defense has to focus on stopping the run instead of Mahomes.

If Walker can still be "that" guy, the Chiefs' 2026 prospects are looking very good.
