The Kansas City Chiefs raised some eyebrows when they signed Justin Fields in a trade from the New York Jets this offseason.
With Chris Oladokun, the only quarterback on the roster, and Patrick Mahomes, who is dealing with an ACL injury, getting a veteran backup was always going to be a priority.
And the Chiefs landed on Fields, who might be tasked with starting the 2026 season as Patrick recovers from his injury.
With Fields' skill set and ability to be damaging with his legs, there is a thought that the Chiefs could have special packages for Fields in certain situations.
But head coach Andy Reid squashed that idea.
“But he’s more than a gadget guy," Reid said via Jesse Newell of The Athletic. "That’s not how I’m looking at him. That’s not why we brought him in. We brought him in to play quarterback if he’s needed to play quarterback. And then whatever goes from there.”

Fields a pure Chiefs QB
At least right now, there doesn't appear to be a desire from Reid to have some special packages for Fields, but should he?
Having Fields' dangerous running ability as a threat at the goal line could be interesting, but Kansas City will want to be careful about using it, because if that is the only play they run with Fields, the defense will know it is coming. So, a diverse playbook for Fields could be an idea.
Still, we imagine Reid could cook something up.
Fields could start the early portion of the 2026 season to give Mahomes longer to recover from his ACL injury, and in Reid's system, it will be interesting to see how Justin fares.
It's a new page in his career, and Reid has no intentions of making Justin a gadget guy in Kansas City.
