Seven people were killed in a head-on collision in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape on Sunday, 5 April 2026.

According to reports, a Renault Triber with seven occupants collided with a Fuso Manganese Truck on the M17 road between KwaZakhele and Motherwell.
ROAD ACCIDENT
Transport Department Spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, said all seven occupants from the Renault died at the scene and the driver of the truck survived the crash.
The Renault Triber, carrying three men and four women, was heading from KwaZakhele to Motherwell, and the truck was travelling in the opposite direction, downwards from Motherwell towards KwaZakhele.
The cause of the accident is still unknown at this stage.
MEC NQATHA MOURNS LIVES LOST IN M17 CRASH
The MEC for Transport, Xolile Nqatha, has extended his condolences to the families of the deceased.
“We are deeply saddened by this devastating loss of seven lives in a single incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones in such tragic circumstances.”
“We once again call on all road users to exercise extreme caution, remain patient, and respect the rules of the road, particularly during this high traffic period,” said Nqatha.
He said the department is committed to intensifying law enforcement operations to improve road safety and prevent further loss of life.
INVESTIGATIONSA case of culpable homicide was opened at Swartkops police station.
Motorists are urged to approach the area with caution or use alternative routes.
