But after the Warriors' play-in loss to the Phoenix Suns on Friday night, Kerr sure sounded like a guy who may be leaving.
He's coached some of the best teams in NBA history while in Golden State, but now he's talking about how all jobs have an "expiration date."
If this indeed the expiration on his time with the Warriors, it will have wide-reaching implications across the NBA, starting right there with Stephen Curry.
What happens to Steph Curry if Steve Kerr leaves?
The Warriors would never get rid of Curry. It seems he'll be able to play out his career in Golden State no matter how much longer he wants to go.
But without Kerr, things would be different.
Kerr wasn't Curry's first NBA coach, but he was the one under whom Curry blossomed into an all-time great. Their partnership has produced championships and iconic moments.
It sure seems like Curry would have to recalibrate his mentality if Kerr leaves and a new coach is brought in.
It'd be a super high-profile gig for a new hire, and it seems like Curry might have at least some say over who the new guy is.
There's also the looming concept of a realistic pursuit of free agent LeBron James this summer. If that comes to fruition, who's the type of coach who would make sense at the helm of a team with Curry and LeBron?
There's also often an adjustment period to a new coach at any level. The Warriors don't have a ton of time left with their leaders still playing at a high level, and they can't afford to take too long to hit their stride next season.
A Kerr departure would be an era ending. But Curry's still going, and the Warriors will hope that works just fine with whoever the new guy would potentially be.
