Diego Pavia has been one of the hottest topics over the past couple months. Before going undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft, the Vanderbilt quarterback took the program to historic highs with the first 10-win season in school history.
However, some of his off-the-field antics were a cause for concern, including slamming Heisman voters and Fernando Mendoza after not taking home the hardware as college football's best player. One of his best moments from Pavia's 2024 season was beating Alabama. Vandy's coming out party put him on the map and helped give him an identity.
Had the Commodores beaten Alabama the second time around in 2025, Pavia would've been praised for his efforts and received some serious NFL Draft buzz. However, the 30-14 loss to the Crimson Tide made the win from the year prior look more like an outlier.
Pavia recalled the lead up to the Alabama game from this year. Needless to say, there was one massive detail we didn't know coming out of the game that changed the perception surrounding the loss. Could the Commodores have knocked off the Tide if Pavia was on time?
During an episode of The Pivot podcast, the newly-signed Baltimore Ravens QB offered his side of the story and why the bout with oversleeping still haunts him months later. What make it all interesting is Pavia was late for a 3:30 p.m. ET game.
“It felt like a blur,” Pavia said. "I wake up, and I’m in the stadium already. I kinda delayed the process, I wasn’t able to throw the ball pregame, and it’s just like, I didn’t feel like me that day.”
The loss to Alabama was one of two in the regular season, including catching an upbeat Texas team on an upswing. If they beat either team, the end result in the College Football Playoff would likely be different. Instead, Pavia struggled all day and finished with 256 yards of total, one touchdown and an interception.

Vanderbilt had four wins over ranked opponents last season. At the point they were defeated by Alabama, Pavia took his team to a 5-0 record to open the season.
“My feet (were) off the whole game. My mind was slow,” he added.
The Ravens signed Pavia to a 3-year UDFA contract after he was passed on in the draft. He'll compete for backup duties behind former NFL MVP Lamar Jackson in Baltimore.
