Stefon Diggs responds to potentially playing for Commanders in 2026

What a week it has been for longtime NFL wide receiver Stefon Diggs. He began the week facing felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault and battery charges, but was found not guilty of all charges. Afterward, Diggs, 32, took to social media to let everyone know he wasn't done with football.

He shouldn't be done with football. Diggs caught 85 passes for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns, and played a significant role in helping lead the New England Patriots to the Super Bowl. However, after the season, the Patriots released Diggs, making him a free agent again.
A native of Montgomery County, Maryland, Diggs was immediately linked to the Washington Commanders. And considering Washington's need at receiver, it made sense. In response to the aforementioned social media post from Diggs, Commanders defensive end Charles Omenihu said, "burgundy and gold."
Diggs responded with multiple eyeball emojis.
On Saturday, Diggs was back in the DMV, as his "Diggs Deep Foundation" was hosting an event for Mother's Day. Naturally, when Diggs spoke to the media, he was asked about the Commanders.
"Yeah, a little bit," Diggs said when asked if he had talked to some Washington players. "I'm familiar with the city and I'm familiar with the people. So, we gonna see down the pipe over these next couple of months. What looks good, what makes sense. I definitely wanna shed some light on them and might go check 'em out for a little bit. It's love. It's hometown. So, it makes sense, but right now, I kinda like to take a breath. I've been training, I've been doing everything I'm supposed to."

Everyone assumes the Commanders are waiting on the 49ers to release Brandon Aiyuk. We know Aiyuk wants to play with his close friend Jayden Daniels. Also, GM Adam Peters also has a history with Aiyuk. Washington makes sense as a destination for Aiyuk. But San Francisco has given no indication that he'll be released anytime soon.
The 49ers will eventually move on from Aiyuk. They've said more than once he's played his last down there. But what if the Commanders grow tired of waiting for Aiyuk to become free? Diggs would make perfect sense. He won't break the bank, you can land him on a one-year deal and he'll be motivated. He proved last year that he could still play at a high level.
Washington used a third-round pick on wide receiver Antonio Williams. While the Commanders are high on Williams, they need to add more starting-level wideout opposite Terry McLaurin. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Diggs over the next several weeks and months.
