According to the Charlotte Observer's Mike Kaye and Houston Chronicle's Jonathan M. Alexander, the Texans will hold a pair of one-day joint practices with their preseason opponents instead of having starters play in the game. The first practice will be with the Raiders on Aug. 18 in Houston, two days before the Texans host Las Vegas in a preseason game. The second will be during the week of the matchup of the final preseason game against the Carolina Panthers.
This has been a customary thing in the DeMeco Ryans era, dating back to 2023 with a practice against the Miami Dolphins. Last season, Houston had joint practices with the Carolina Panthers and the Detroit Lions. The year before that, Houston met up against Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams in Houston for an open practice with fans in attendance.
Carolina, fresh off winning the NFC South for the first time under coach Dave Canales and quarterback Bryce Young, is expected to be a rising team built on competing beyond 2026. As for the Raiders, headlined by No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza, will be a team to montior under Klint Kubiak, the son of former Texans head coach Gary Kubiak.
The Texans will face off against the Los Angeles Chargers in the preseason too, though it is unclear if they will have a joint practice.
