It wasn’t Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, or Scottie Scheffler who made a late charge to win the year’s second major. Instead, it was world number 44 Rai who slammed the door shut with an incredible putt on the 17th green.

Rai is an interesting character. He wears gloves on both hands, uses castle tees, and has headcovers on his irons. But hold off on making fun of him for the latter, because the reason Rai uses iron covers is truly heart-warming.

The real reason Aaron Rai uses iron covers

Rai comes from humble beginnings as a working-class lad from Wolverhampton, and that taught him to look after his equipment. He said his dad spent money he didn’t have to buy Rai clubs, and the head covers were to protect them.

He said, “It started from the age of four years old, when my dad used to pay for my equipment. He paid for my membership, paid for my entry fees. It wasn’t money that we really had, to be honest, but he’d always buy me the best clubs.

“When we used to go out and practice, he used to clean every single groove afterward with a pin and baby oil, and to protect the golf clubs he thought it would be good to put iron covers on them.

“And I’ve pretty much had iron covers on all my sets ever since, just to kind of appreciate the value of what I have.”

That’s an incredible reason for using headcovers. We’re never too wealthy to look after what we have, and show respect to our belongings. This homage to his father’s lessons tell you all you need to know about the type of man Rai is.
