The New York Mets will be without right-hander Clay Holmes for an extended period of time.
Today, the NL East club placed Holmes on the 60-day IL with a fractured fibula. Spencer Jones of the New York Yankees lined a comebacker off Holmes' leg this past Friday.
Now that Holmes is off the 40-man roster, the Mets are eligible to select another player's contract. According to Darragh McDonald of MLB Trade Rumors, they've selected the contract of left-hander Anderson Severino.
McDonald also adds that Severino was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse after last night's game.
"Giving him a spot prevents him from opting out or getting sent elsewhere, but also doesn’t require the club to immediately call the player up, which would then require a corresponding move," McDonald wrote Tuesday. "There have also been a few cases where a player has been given a roster spot to prevent him from pursuing an opportunity overseas."

The 31-year-old last pitched in the Majors with the Chicago White Sox in 2022 and made six appearances. Severino owns a 1.09 ERA with a 27.3% strikeout rate in 17.1 Triple-A innings this season.
This is not a flashy move for the Mets, but one that flies under the radar. Holmes' progress is their top priority, but Severino is a southpaw who could contribute later this season.
