The Boston Red Sox season has been as bad as anybody could have imagined, and it's only continuing to get worse with some of the injuries they're currently dealing with. It's been unfortunate to watch on all levels, but it's something Boston just has to deal with at this point.
The latest to go down was Trevor Story, and while that's disappointing for many reasons, some Red Sox fans are hopeful it could lead to a change they already want to see.
That would be Marcelo Mayer playing shortstop while Story is out, hoping to get the youngster going at his natural position as he's struggled offensively since making his debut in 2025.
Skipper Chad Tracy recently spoke about that, even going as far as to say that he understands it's a big conversation around the fan base, and it's something he's considered.
“I know the big question is Marcelo; everybody’s gonna want to know that,” Tracy said, per The Athletic. “I do think part of that depends on knowing what’s happening with Trevor. Is this a three-week thing and he’s going to be back quick? Or is this a longer thing? We have definitely kicked (that) around. We know Marcelo has played short. He’s done it his whole life.”
With Mayer struggling at the level he has this season, making him play shortstop full-time while Story is out, even if that ends up only being for another week or so, can definitely add some pressure to him.
However, there's also a possibility that he feels more comfortable at the position and, as a result, swings it better offensively. I'd be willing to take that risk right now for the 23-year-old.
