Vikings Nemesis Finally Has an Endgame
· Yahoo Sports
There’s Aaron Rodgers news this week — a pretty notable development if he’s telling the truth — that does not directly involve the Minnesota Vikings. Formerly the franchise’s foremost foe for about 15 years, Rodgers now plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers and announced Wednesday that 2026 will be his final season.

Rodgers kept the Steelers in limbo for four months about his return or retirement this offseason, but he’s back, and it’s the last time.
A Final Chapter Begins for Rodgers in Pittsburgh
The end of the road. Finally.

A reporter asked Rodgers this week if 2026 would be his final campaign, and he replied, “Yes, this is it.”
“I thought that was probably it for me in Pittsburgh. But when the decision was made to hire Mike, I started opening my mind back up to coming back,” he added.
NBC News‘ Andrew Greif added, “Rodgers said he felt ‘some doubt’ about returning for this season before he decided to re-sign with Pittsburgh after April’s NFL draft, according to ESPN. One factor in his decision was Pittsburgh’s new coach, Mike McCarthy, whom Rodgers had played for in Green Bay for 13 seasons.”
“He finished the season with his highest completion percentage and passer rating since 2021 and 24 touchdowns, his fewest in a season in which he played at least 10 games.”
The Outlook in 2026 with Mike McCarthy
Hiring one of Rodgers’s old confidants evidently did the trick for the future Hall of Famer, who was on the fence. Pittsburgh said goodbye to Mike Tomlin this offseason, and it’s The McCarthy Show indefinitely.
Rodgers will return alongside a decent defense that ranked 19th leaguewide in 2025 per EPA/Play. Led by him, the Steelers’ offense checked in at No. 18 per the same metric. The team doesn’t have extreme firepower on either side of the ball, but that seems to be how the Steelers like it. All around decent everything. Nothing great, everything passable.
For weaponry, Rodgers will distribute to rock among these playmakers
- DK Metcalf (WR)
- Michael Pittman (WR)
- Germie Bernard (WR)
- Kaden Wetjen (WR)
- Jaylen Warren (RB)
- Rico Dowdle (RB)
- Kaleb Johnson (RB)
- Darnell Washington (TE)
- Pat Freiermuth (TE)
Fox Sports‘ Ralph Vacchiano noted on the Steelers’ supporting cast this week, “No one can say the Steelers aren’t doing everything they can to help 42-year-old QB Aaron Rodgers have one last shot at glory. They brought in WR DK Metcalf for him last season, then traded for the underrated (and big) Michael Pittman this offseason.”
“They used a second-round pick on WR Germie Bernard, who’ll be a good No. 3 receiver. They protected Rodgers well last season with a young offensive line, and they just added right tackle Max Iheanachor in the first round. And they brought in RB Rico Dowdle, who should give a jolt to what was a bad rushing attack in 2025.”

Performance in 2025
Rodgers started 16 of 17 games in 2025, delivering a 65.7% completion rate, 3,332 passing yards, 25 total touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. His Steelers finished 10-7 and got crushed by the Houston Texans in Round 1 of the playoffs.
Via EPA+CPOE, Rodgers ranked 22nd in the business among his quarterback peers, sandwiched between Michael Penix Jr. and Tyler Shough for efficiency. These days, he’s basically a middle-of-the-road quarterback, at best.
Of course, with McCarthy in the loop, Steelers fans will hope Rodgers can turn back the clock one final time.
CBS Sports‘ Garrett Podell noted on Rodgers Wednesday, “It makes sense that Rodgers is choosing to walk away after the coming year. He simply doesn’t have the same magic that made him one of the league’s best to ever do it.”
“One of his top strengths throughout his future Hall of Fame career is his ability to scramble and dance around in and outside of the pocket to create throwing lanes and big plays. However with limited mobility in his 40s, the magic is slipping away. On third downs in 2025, Rodgers surrendered a sack rate of 10.7%, the 10th-highest in the entire NFL. “
A Viking Killer Through and Through
More than any quarterback in NFL history, Rodgers persistently terrorized the Vikings. While it was never automatic that his Packers would beat the Vikings on any given Sunday from 2008 to 2022, he personally hardly ever struggled against the purple team.

Rodgers will turn 43 in early December.
