Sonitpur Senior Superintendent of Police Barun Purkayastha told Scroll that while a case has been registered in the matter, no persons had been arrested yet. “The victims belong to a minority community from Morigaon district,” the police officer confirmed.

The incident took place in the Bhalukpung area after villagers intercepted the three men allegedly trying to flee with three cows in a mini-truck, the Hindustan Times reported. They were beaten up by the mob, Purkayastha told the newspaper.

The two men had died in the assault before the police reached the spot. Another person was injured.

On Thursday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Assam was showing “zero tolerance towards cattle smuggling”.

More than 850 alleged cattle thieves had been arrested in the state since January and over 2,980 kg of beef had been seized, the chief minister said on social media.

“Ahead of the upcoming festival next week, we continue to remain extremely vigilant,” Sarma said, in an apparent reference to Bakrid on May 27.

Bakrid, also known as Eid-al-Adha, is a Muslim festival that commemorates the spirit of sacrifice. The festival is traditionally marked by the slaughtering of goats.
