COVENTRY - After transportation issues, the Pilgrim softball team knew it was going to be leaving Coventry late on Friday night.
Visit freshyourfeel.com for more information.
It just wasnât expecting it to be as late as it was.
The Patriots came off the bus swinging, then watched as the Oakers made their five-run lead disappear. In the 10th inning, with the international runner in play, Anna Bryson came through with a bloop single to give 10th-seeded Pilgrim the lead for good in a 7-6 win over No. 7 Coventry in the single-elimination round of the State Tournament.
Pilgrim and Coventry were set to start at 5 p.m., but bus issues didnât get the Patriots to the field until after the scheduled start time. Pilgrim warmed up fast and didnât look any worse for wear, getting two runs in the first inning on RBI singles from Bryson and Skylar Hawes, manufacturing a run in the second and getting two more in the third on a Gretchen Dombeck double.
Coventryâs started chipping away slowly, putting up two runs in the fourth before a two-run bomb by Katherine Guiot made it a one run game. The deficit remained there in the seventh until senior Leah Lapham stepped to the plate with one out, promptly depositing a pitch over the left field fence for her first home run of the year.
After two scoreless innings, the international runner was applied in the 10th. Bryson took advantage wit a single to right that brought in Maddie Tuirok and two batters later, Bryson scored on a single by Natalie Fratus.
The Oakers had one last comeback attempt in them, getting a two-out single from Payton Baris to cut the deficit to one, but Dombeck â who took over in the circle in the ninth inning â got a fly ball to center that was easily handled by Hawes.
Bryson had a huge day, going 3-for-5 with three runs and one RBI. Dombeck had two hits and two RBI and Tuirok scored twice in the win. Pilgrim now moves on to the double-elimination portion of the State Tournament and will play No. 2 seed Chariho next week.
Coventryâs seniors performed admirably in their final appearance. Lapham had the game-tying home run and scored three runs, Guiot had the big home run and Addison Kerwin went 2-for-5 with one run in the loss.
âŸBASEBALL - D-I preliminaries
No. 5 North Kingstown 5, No. 12 Cranston East 0Â
Bodie Forsell carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and his offense did enough to boost the Skippers past the Thunderbolts, 5-0.Â
Brayden Enright and Andres Morel each recorded infield singles against Forsell with one out in the seventh. The right-hander closed a shutout instead by retiring the last two men he faced. Forsell finished with 10 strikeouts against a lone walk and needed 96 pitches in his complete game.Â
North Kingstown did the majority of its damage in the bottom of the fourth, finally breaking through against left-hander Marcelo Acosta. EthanSchmitt fought off a two-run single to left-center and freshman catcher Rory Plaziak added a two-run single down the line in right out of the No. 9 spot in the order.Â
Cranston East saw its season end while the Skippers advance into Pod 1. Theyâll face rival South Kingstown to begin the double-elimination format Tuesday at Old Mountain Field.Â
No. 6 Lincoln 11, No. 11 Cumberland 4Â
The Lions used twin five-run innings in the third and fourth to jump ahead of the Clippers and finished off a victory under the lights at Chet Nichols Field.Â
Joey Lezonâs three-run double down the line in left was the deciding blow in the fourth, as Lincoln built a 10-0 cushion and was counting the outs from there. Lezon finished with two hits and four RBI while Carson Mellen and Tyler Almeida each added two hits. Lucas Marshall chipped in an RBI and two runs scored.Â
Logan Xiarhos picked up the win on the mound for the Lions (14-7), covering the first five innings and striking out two. Mellen finished up with two scoreless frames and avoided further damage after Cumberland (9-10) plated four runs in the top of the fifth. Paxton Chenevertâs clean RBI single to left capped a rally that helped the Clippers extend the game.Â
Lincoln advances into Pod 2 and will travel to East Providence to begin the double-elimination format Tuesday. The Townies swept the Lions in two games this season, including a 10-6 thriller in eight innings in April. Â

Dayton Lee was 2-for-3 for the Mariners and teammate Ethan Gordon's sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the fourth plated what proved to be game-winner.Â
Adam DeCesare was the tough-luck loser for Burrillville. He completed six innings on the mound, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits, with one walk and three Ks.
DeCesare, Chase Gavis, and Logan Gomez each collected one hit for Burrillville.

The Narragansett offense backed the solid effort by Kent, amassing 12 hits in the contest.
Leading the way at the dish for the Mariners were Jackson DiFilippo, Vito Paglia, Finley Hohl and Max Downing as each of them banged out two hits.
DiFillippo, who also walked three time, and Downey each had two RBI in the win.
Jack Rosia had a hit and an RBI for the Rogers in the loss.

âŸBASEBALL - Division III preliminaries
No. 11 Tiverton 12, No. 6 Juanita Sanchez 4
The Tigers and Cavaliers played a close four innings, with each team scoring once and each starter limiting the opponent's bats. But things changed in the top of the fifth when Tiverton scored six runs and the hosts had trouble keeping up.
Two walks, a single and an infield error brought home one run, followed by a pair of singles to plate another. Errors and hit batsmen brought home four more runs and the Tigers were staked to a lead they did wouldn't give up.
Alex Monkevicz earned the win, striking out eight through six innings and Aiden Sylvia closed the door with a scoreless seventh with one strikeout.
Monkevicz drove in a team-leading three runs, collected two hits and scored twice. James Conley had two hits and scored twice, and Sylas Carlile and Zack Carreiro each scored twice, as well.

No. 8 North Smithfield 8, No. 9 Mt. Pleasant 4
The Northmen answered the Kilties early scores with three runs of their own, and added another five to punch their ticket to pod play next week.
Trailing by three runs after one inning, North Smithfield tied the game in the second when Nick Tremblay doubled with the bases loaded. Two more runs came around in the third when Mason Glode tripled to score Dylan Nickerson, then scored on a wild pitch.

No. 12 Hope 2, No. 5 PCD 1
Both teams scored in the first inning, and both starting pitchers made sure there were no more runs the rest of the way: Good news for the Blue Wave, whose starter Josh Tejada struck out five and allowed just two hits through seven innings for a complete-game victory.
Hope's two runs came thanks a two-run bomb by Chris Bernard, bringing home Tejada who had reached on a single.
PCD starter Maddux Fredericks took the hard-luck loss, striking out six through a full seven innings, and allowing two runs on four hits. The Knights scored in the first inning when Tom Migneault tripled with two outs, then scored on an infield error.
Hope moves on to pod play next week.
No. 7 BVPCF 3, No. 10 Pawtucket 1
Noah Ferreira tossed a gem for the Blackstone Valley Prep/Central Falls co-op in a 3-1 victory.
The senior allowed just one hit with nine strikeouts to one walk against Pawtucket at Macomber Stadium. Pawtucket ended the no-hit bid in the sixth on a double and then scored on an error. Ferreira and the defense, though, buckled down and turned an inning-ending double play.
BVPCF plated a run in the first inning on Cameron Beaudreauâs RBI single to right that scored Ferreira. The hosts added two more runs in the third as Aliezel FernĂĄndez put the ball in play to the right side. An untimely error hurt Pawtucket in the sequence.
