Clemens Fritz remains managing director for sport at Bundesliga club Werder Bremen despite only narrowly avoiding relegation in "a difficult season, which we cannot be satisfied with."

Bremen said on Sunday that the supervisory board unanimously voted 9-0 to retain Fritz while at the same time urging improvement in the next campaign.

Bremen finished just above the danger zone in 15th place, with new coach Horst Steffen lasting less than a season and replaced by Daniel Thioune.

The supervisory board said in its season review that while a difficult season was expected due to a strategic realignment "the way the season unfolded fell short of our expectations and the standards we had set.

"Mistakes were made in terms of planning and implementation, and there were also some misjudgements in our transfer policy."

But it also said that Fritz "clearly identified and analysed these mistakes and, where possible, corrected them during the season.

"Clemens demonstrated management qualities during a major crisis and implemented measures during the season to significantly improve processes and coordination."

The appointment of Steffen flopped and so did the signing of forward Victor Boniface, with seven of last summer's new players arriving on loan.

Former Bremen captain Fritz is now mainly working on much needed income, with goalkeeper Mio Backhaus sold to Freiburg for more than €10 million ($11.6 million) and Jens Stage and Karim Coulibaly also candidates to exit for substantial fees.

"Despite a significantly changed squad, we expect stable development, consistency and a cutting edge in attack next season," the statement said.

"We expect a team that is put together to be competitive and that excites people with good energy, great passion and an attacking style of play.

"We are convinced that, with Clemens Fritz as managing director for sport, we are very well placed and on the right track."
