Anthony Kay then worked six strong innings, while the bullpen protected the lead and Seranthony Domínguez closed the game for his 11th save.

The game was far from just another day at the office for Murakami, as it moved him closer to a historic rookie achievement in MLB.

The Japanese star’s homer was his 18th of the season, moving him within one of the most home runs by a rookie before June in MLB history.

According to ESPN, Pete Alonso hit 19 before June in 2019 and Mark McGwire also reached 19 in 1987. Murakami now sits third on 18.

The 26-year-old Japanese first baseman still has six games before June begins, giving him time to tie or pass both marks.

Chicago return this Tuesday against Minnesota, which means Murakami could have a historic evening if he goes deep again.

The remaining May schedule also includes two more games against the Twins and three against the Detroit Tigers, all at Rate Field.

That keeps the chase immediate. Murakami has already put himself beside two of MLB’s most notable rookie power seasons before the calendar reaches June.

Now the question is whether his next swing can turn a strong start into a record-breaking one for the White Sox.
