Boston Red Sox fans received tough news Friday when interim manager Chad Tracy revealed that outfielder Roman Anthony was being shut down from swinging after feeling discomfort in his injured right hand while attempting to hit off a tee Thursday.

The setback came as Anthony tried hitting off a tee for the first time since initially being shut down on May 4.

According to a report by MassLive's Chris Cotillo, the 22-year-old didn't travel with the Red Sox to Cleveland for their series against the Guardians and "is not expected to try swinging again before at least Tuesday," which is when Boston returns home to play the Baltimore Orioles.

Tracy defended Anthony amid the latest setback.

"It’s not Roman’s fault," the 40-year-old former manager of the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox said, per Cotillo. "None of that’s anybody’s fault. It’s just that he got hurt and it’s a nagging injury on a hand when he’s trying to hit. We have to be patient with that and it’s gonna take a little longer."

Anthony was placed on the injured list on May 7 with what was called a right wrist sprain, hasn't played since May 4 and has missed the team's last 21 games.
