Stillman Valley powers past North Boone for a sectional softball championship

MARENGO, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — North Boone has been the Big Northern Conference softball powerhouse that has gone to state the past two years, but this time it might be Stillman Valley going to State. The Cardinals are one win away from doing that after defeating North Boone 11-5 Friday for the championship at the 2A Marengo Sectional.

Stillman Valley jumped on North Boone for four home runs in the first four innings while building up a 10-0 lead. Shortstop Sydney Musial hit two of those home runs on her way to a 3-for-3 day at the plate. She also scored four runs. First baseman Sage Sweet and catcher Mylee Hulstedt also homered. Addison Adler added a pair of hits. In all, the Cardinals had 13 hits.

Meanwhile, freshman pitcher Kaiya Hildreth pitched with poise and precision for the Cardinals. She got the start and showed that she’s a big-game pitcher. She held North Boone’s potent lineup off the scoreboard through the first four innings.

North Boone broke through for a pair of runs in the top of the fifth on a two-run homer by Aubrie Dornink. The Vikings added three more in the top of the sixth on a bases loaded double by Rachel Dahl, but Hildreth set down the Vikings in the top of the seventh getting the final out on her 11th strikeout of the game.

Stillman Valley advances to the 2A Lisle Benedictine University Super-Sectional Monday at 4 p.m. The Cardinals will play IC Catholic.
