The two clubs have been discussing what happens next with Joao Cancelo, who has enjoyed a good loan stint at Barcelona from the Saudi Pro League club. Barca want Cancelo to stay but need to agreed a deal with Al-Hilal.
During the discussions it appears Nunez’s name has been mentioned, per Mundo Deportivo. The striker’s had a tough time with Al-Hilal and could end up terminating his contract with the club.
Nunez moved to Saudi Arabia last summer after losing his place in the Liverpool team. He has gone on to score six goals in 16 appearances in the Saudi Pro League for Al-Hilal this season.
However, the Uruguayan hasn’t been able to play for the club in the Saudi Pro League since Karim Benzema was signed in the winter due to limits on foreign players.
Nunez has therefore long been tipped to leave this summer and could move on a free. He has been linked to Barcelona previously, with Ramon Planes admitting the club previously came close to signing him as a replacement for Luis Suarez.
Yet it’s not clear if there’s any definitive interest from Barca in Nunez, as MD are unsure whether Nunez’s name cropped up “as a proposal from Barça or an offer from Saudi Arabia.” For now, Julian Alvarez remains the club’s top target for the No. 9 position.
