Reaction officers arrived and found the South African tenant unharmed.

He told officers he had recently lost his job at a call centre and had fallen behind on rent payments of about R3 500.

He said the landlord confronted him earlier in the day about the outstanding amount, chased him and allegedly fired a shot in his direction.

The landlord fled before officers arrived. Reports indicate that a spent cartridge casing was removed from the scene shortly after the incident.

The tenant said he is due to start a new job on Monday and plans to pay the outstanding rent once he receives his first salary.
