Penei Sewell Opens Up About Transition to Left Tackle
· Yahoo Sports
The Detroit Lions are asking one of the NFL’s best offensive linemen to do something new in 2026.
After establishing himself as an All-Pro right tackle, Penei Sewell is making the move to the left side following the retirement of Taylor Decker. While many fans assume a player of Sewell’s caliber can seamlessly transition anywhere along the offensive line, the Lions star made it clear that the adjustment comes with challenges.

Speaking after Thursday’s OTA practice in Allen Park, Sewell offered an honest look at how the transition is progressing.
Penei Sewell Taking Things One Day at a Time
The move from right tackle to left tackle has become one of the biggest storylines of Detroit’s offseason.
Fortunately for Sewell, he understands he’s not the first player to make the switch.
“I think everybody has a pretty good understanding now of what the switch is like.”
He acknowledged that several NFL players have successfully navigated similar transitions throughout their careers.
“There have been other players around the league who have talked about making that move.”
Rather than becoming overwhelmed by the process, Sewell is focused on incremental improvement.
“For me, it’s about taking it day by day and focusing on what’s right in front of me.”
That approach has helped him avoid unnecessary frustration.
“If I look too far ahead, it can get frustrating. So I just come into the building every day and find something to improve.”
The Biggest Challenge of Playing Left Tackle
While Sewell wasn’t interested in overcomplicating the discussion, he admitted that changing sides of the offensive line is far from simple.
The mechanics alone require significant adjustment.
“Everybody has already talked about it, so I’m not going to reinvent all that.”
Still, he acknowledged that many of the fundamentals he’s relied upon throughout his career now require modification.
“It’s different. You’re switching your stance and changing a lot of things you’ve done before.”
For Sewell, however, there is little value in dwelling on the difficulty.
“But it is what it is.”
That response perfectly captures the mindset that has made him one of the league’s premier offensive linemen.
No excuses. No complaints. Just work.
Sewell Focused on His Own Process
One interesting aspect of Sewell’s transition is that he has not sought advice from other players who have made a similar move.
At least not yet.
“No, I haven’t reached out to anyone.”
For now, his focus remains internal.
“Right now, I’m just focused on myself.”
That doesn’t mean he won’t eventually study others who have successfully made the transition.
“As the season goes on, I’ll watch other players, see what they do, and take notes.”
But at this stage of the offseason, Sewell believes his time is best spent mastering his own responsibilities.
Why Lions Fans Should Feel Confident
If there is one player capable of making this transition successfully, it is Sewell.
The four-time Pro Bowler has already established himself as one of football’s most dominant offensive linemen. His combination of athleticism, power, intelligence, and work ethic has consistently separated him from his peers.
Most importantly, his comments reveal a player approaching the challenge with patience and humility.
The Lions are not asking Sewell to become a great left tackle overnight.
They’re asking him to improve every day.
Based on his approach, there is little reason to doubt he’ll do exactly that.
