2027 5-star CB and Texas A&M target ineligible for senior HS season

Texas A&M's ongoing battle for the No. 2-ranked prospect in the 2027 class, five-star cornerback John Meredith, is considered one of the best defensive back prospects in several years. After landing former five-star CB Brandon Arrington in the 2026 signing class, the Aggies are on the cusp of securing either Meredith or fellow five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson's commitment in the coming weeks.
The Texas Longhorns have now become the favorites to win the John Meredith recruiting battle after his official visit to Austin, while the Aggies remain the leaders for Joshua Dobson, as expected for the last two weeks. However, on Friday night, it was revealed that John Meredith, who transferred to North Crowley (Texas) for his senior season, has been deemed ineligible to play varsity football next season.

First reported by Dallas Morning News writer Greg Riddle, Meredith was deemed ineligible during an 11-6A district executive committee meeting on Thursday by a vote of 5-2, placing the five-star defensive back's high school playing future in flux, and while Meredith has options to appeal, Riddle further stated that these decisions are rarely reversed.
"Meredith can appeal the DEC ruling to the University Interscholastic League’s state executive committee. But DEC results are hard to get overturned."
If this stands, Meredith has enough film and experience as a varsity starter to enter the college ranks in great shape this time next year, and will be even healthier given one less year of a full high school schedule. According to Rivals, John Meredith is the 2nd-ranked prospect in the 2027 class, the No. 1-ranked cornerback, and the 2nd-ranked prospect in Texas.
