Kentucky Football added another piece to its growing 2027 recruiting class on Friday, as 3-star edge rusher Jaylen Mercer announced his commitment to the Wildcats.

Mercer, a 6-foot-5, 230-pound prospect from Cincinnati, Ohio, chose Kentucky over a list of notable programs that included Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Oregon, Ole Miss, Indiana, Michigan, Tennessee, Louisville, West Virginia, Arizona State, Boston College, Cincinnati, and several others.
According to 247 Sports Composite, Mercer is ranked as the No. 556 overall player in the nation, the No. 51 edge rusher, and the No. 22 prospect in the state of Ohio.
Kentucky’s pursuit of Mercer dates back several years. The Wildcats first extended an offer in December 2023 when former head coach Mark Stoops and recruiting coordinator Vince Marrow were still on staff. Mercer later made an unofficial visit to Lexington in March 2024, helping establish a strong relationship with the program early in his recruitment.
Even after Stoops was dismissed and Marrow departed for Louisville, Kentucky’s new coaching staff continued prioritizing Mercer and maintained consistent communication throughout the recruiting process. That persistence ultimately paid off as the Wildcats secured another important commitment from a player with significant upside and physical tools.
Mercer was originally scheduled to visit Kentucky this weekend, but those plans were delayed following the tragic passing of Wildcats teammate Nic Smith. Despite the change in plans, Kentucky’s relationship with Mercer remained strong enough to earn his commitment.
With Mercer’s pledge, Kentucky continues to add size, athleticism, and talent to its 2027 recruiting class as the Wildcats look to strengthen their future defensive front.
