Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever walked out of Connecticut with another win on Saturday afternoon, but the Fever star also left with something she would have preferred to avoid.

Clark scored a game-high 25 points and helped Indiana defeat the Connecticut Sun 85-75 for its third consecutive victory. However, a late technical foul added another wrinkle to what has already been a frustrating season when it comes to officiating and player discipline.
The technical was Clark's fourth of the season, putting her halfway to the WNBA's automatic suspension threshold and creating a storyline that could become increasingly important as the season progresses.
For now, the Fever are winning games. But Clark's growing technical foul count is becoming difficult to ignore.
Clark's stellar performance overshadowed by late technical
Clark was once again the engine behind Indiana's offense against the Sun. The former No. 1 overall pick finished with 25 points, five assists and three rebounds while shooting 10-for-17 from the field and 5-for-10 from 3-point range. She also moved into sixth place on the Fever's all-time 3-point list despite still being in the early stages of her WNBA career.
The Fever led for much of the afternoon and improved to 8-5 on the season with the win. Yet one of the biggest talking points after the game wasn't Clark's scoring performance.
Instead, it was the technical foul she received with 22 seconds remaining. The call came after a tense finish that also featured confusion surrounding an earlier technical assessed to Clark. Initially, officials appeared to charge her with a technical foul after she attempted to kick the ball up to herself late in the fourth quarter.
Had that technical remained on her record, Clark would have been ejected. Instead, officials changed the call to a team delay-of-game violation, allowing her to stay in the game.
Why Clark's technical count matters
The late technical brought Clark's season total to four. Under WNBA rules, technical fouls carry escalating financial penalties. After receiving three technical fouls earlier in the season, Clark now moves into the next tier of discipline, which comes with a larger fine.
More importantly, every technical foul moves her closer to an automatic suspension. Players are suspended for one game after receiving their eighth technical foul of the season. Additional technicals beyond that point can lead to further suspensions.
That's why Saturday's technical could have larger implications than the fine itself. Clark plays with visible emotion and competitiveness, two qualities that have helped make her one of the league's biggest stars. But those same qualities can occasionally put her in situations where frustration spills over during games.
The Fever would undoubtedly prefer to avoid any scenario that puts their franchise centerpiece at risk of missing games later in the season.

Fever continue trending upward
Despite the technical foul storyline, Indiana has plenty of reasons to feel encouraged. The Fever have now won three straight games and appear to be building momentum after a somewhat inconsistent start to the season.
Aliyah Boston added 13 points and 11 rebounds against Connecticut, while Kelsey Mitchell scored 19 points. Sophie Cunningham chipped in 11 points off the bench as Indiana continued to show improved depth and balance. And as usual, Clark remained at the center of everything.
She delivered another 25-point performance, knocked down five 3-pointers and helped lead Indiana to another victory. The only question now is whether the Fever can keep her technical foul total from becoming a bigger story later in the season. After Saturday, that conversation is becoming much harder to avoid.
