Soccer squads hit the pitch as Mitchell hosts Palace City Cup youth tourney

Jun. 14—MITCHELL — There were 17 soccer teams in Mitchell over the weekend for the Palace City Cup youth soccer tournament at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex.

The tournament format included playing a series of pool games, with no final bracket play.

Starting in the under-nine boys division, the Mitchell Soccer Association fielded two teams. The MSA Black team went 2-1 over the weekend, outscoring its opponents 6-5 in three matches, while MSA went 0-2 with nine goals scored. A BASA team from Brandon won the U9 division, finishing 3-0 and outscoring its opponents 14-5.

In the under-10 boys division, the SoDak Spurs, a team based out of Brookings, finished with the top record out of the four-team pool at 3-0 and outscored its opponents 11-0. The Timbers of MSA went 1-2 on the weekend in pool play.

The U11/U12 boys bracket only had two teams, as the Impact of the Mitchell Soccer Association won both matches against BASA, of Brandon, on the weekend and outscored them 14-2. The U11/U12 girls division also only fielded two teams, as the Fire and Ice squad of the MSA split with BASA, of Brandon, and picked up the 3-2 victory in the second game on Saturday.

To round out the youth soccer action, an Aftershock team from Tea outscored its opponents 36-2 in pool play before downing BASA 7-2 in the championship final on Sunday in the U13/U14 boys division.
