On the eve of his team’s World Cup opening match, Didier Deschamps was notably asked about whether he considered his France squad to be among the favourites to reclaim their title.
Responding to a Spanish journalist, the head coach dismissed the suggestion that Les Bleus were the outright favourites, instead insisting that La Roja are in a better position to go all the way in North America.

“Our ambitions of winning the World Cup are legitimate, but there’s still a long way to go,” the 54-year-old warned.
“We have a lot of potential, but I’m not going to say that France is better than the other teams. The big favourite is Spain, though, I have no doubt about that.”
Deschamps’ team kick off their campaign tomorrow afternoon against Senegal, before facing Iraq and then Norway. Les Bleus will play in New York/New Jersey, before travelling to Philadelphia and then finish their group campaign near their base camp in Boston.
