Extraordinary longevity

Jonathan’s inclusion highlights not only his extraordinary longevity but also the affection and admiration he has inspired around the world.

He is reported to be around 193 to 194 years of age.

The giant tortoise resides at Plantation House, the official residence of the Governor of St Helena, where he has become one of the island’s most recognisable and beloved figures.

Over the years, Jonathan has welcomed countless visitors from across the globe and has become deeply woven into the identity and heritage of the remote South Atlantic island.

Remarkable lifespan

His remarkable lifespan has seen him witness dramatic changes in society and technology, from the arrival of motor vehicles and electricity to television, mobile phones and internet connectivity.

St Helena Government said Jonathan’s recognition would bring valuable international attention to the island and celebrate his enduring role as a symbol of resilience and continuity.

His Excellency Governor Nigel Phillips welcomed the announcement, saying Jonathan has long been regarded as a local icon by generations of island residents.

“Jonathan’s recognition as a Guinness World Records ICON is warmly welcomed by the people of St Helena,” Phillips said.

“For generations, he has been regarded as a local icon, deeply embedded in the island’s identity and collective memory. This global acknowledgement reflects what the community has long known, that Jonathan is not only remarkable in age, but truly special to St Helena and its people.”

Exclusive group

Guinness World Records ICON status is reserved for a select group of record-holders, pioneers and internationally significant figures whose achievements have had a lasting impact.

Jonathan’s inclusion places him among an exclusive group of globally recognised icons and further cements his place in both world history and St Helena’s cultural heritage.

A media briefing hosted by Governor Phillips and his wife, Emma Phillips, is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, 17 June where further details about Jonathan’s recognition are expected to be discussed.

For the people of St Helena, however, Jonathan’s latest accolade simply confirms what they have known for generations – that their famous tortoise is truly one of a kind.
