The USMNT opened the group stage with a dominant victory against Paraguay on Friday, June 12 and heads into its second game tied with Australia for the lead in Group D. Folarin Balogun netted two of the USA’s three first-half goals and the U.S. went on to win 4-1.

Australia defeated Turkey 2-0 in its first match of group play on Sunday, June 14.

The USMNT is competing with Australia, Turkey and Paraguay in the Group D bracket where a win is worth three points and a tie is worth one. Each team will have three matches in group play, with the top two advancing automatically to the round of 32, which becomes a knockout stage. Eight third-place teams from the 12 groups will also move on.

A win over Australia would give the U.S. the tiebreaker against both Australia and Paraguay heading into its final match against Turkey in the group stage. If the U.S. wins and Paraguay wins or draws against Turkey in its match on Friday, June 19 at 11 p.m. then the US would secure a spot in the round of 32 automatically.

The last time the USMNT won its group stage was in 2010 at the South Africa World Cup, when it beat a group including Slovenia, Algeria and England.
