Cristian Javier hasn’t been the same since his 2024 season ended abruptly thanks to an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery.

Prior to that unfortunate turn of events, Javier was not only a hero for his 2022 World Series exploits, but he was a quality arm known for a fastball that had some of the best movement in MLB even before he made his Majors debut.
Javier’s fastball has seen a concerning velocity drop in recent years, and it’s no longer the same pitch that carried him to six no-hit innings in a World Series game.
Cristian Javier’s fastball efficiency will decide how well he fares in return from injury
The fact that Javier hasn’t been healthy for long stretches since 2023 is a big reason why his velocity isn’t the same as it was before his Tommy John surgery, but velocity is just one part of the equation.
Javier’s invisiball was considered elite because of its vertical break. Even in his subpar 2025 season, his fastball had 18.5 inches of vertical break, 2.7 more inches than the league average according to Baseball Savant. In limited 2026 action, that number has dropped to 16.8, which is now only 0.9 inches above league average.
It might not seem like a big deal, but that difference in break can result in a whiff or a barreled hit. For context, opponents were barreling Javier at a 12.1% rate in 2026 before going on the IL.
Javier’s velocity will be the main talking point when he wraps up his final rehab start on Sunday and returns to MLB action. But if he can recapture even an inch of vertical break on his fastball, he might as well recover part of what made him a special talent on a World Series-caliber squad.
