Angels’ Arte Moreno Not Looking to Move Key Pieces at Deadline

· Yahoo Sports

Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno made his stance clear on the Halos’ deadline plans, saying he wouldn’t trade any of his valuable assets come Aug. 3, per USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.

Some of the Angels’ best performers this season, such as Reid Detmers and Jose Soriano, have picked up plenty of interest around the league, and could command a solid package if they were to move this year. Moreno, though, isn’t willing to move them.

“The Los Angeles Angels also plan to retain their key players at the deadline with owner Arte Moreno not wanting to unload starters Reid Detmers and Jose Soriano, or outfielder Jo Adell,” Nightengale wrote. “Detmers and Soriano still are under team control through 2028, while Adell is eligible for free agency after the 2027 season.

“If the Angels changed their mind and made Detmers available, they could demand a package greater than the one the Tigers will receive for two-time Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal. He not only has two more years of control than Skubal, but is earning just $2.7 million.”

The Angels could certainly use a package of that magnitude, as they routinely have one of the weakest farm systems in MLB. Los Angeles hasn’t been competitive for a long while, not reaching the postseason since 2014 and posting sub-.500 win totals since 2016.

Rejuvenating the farm system could be just what they need to turn things around and compete in a few seasons, though Moreno seems content with what he has on his squad.

How Have Reid Detmers, Jose Soriano and Jo Adell Played This Year?

The Angels have a solid core in Detmers, Soriano and Adell, as they all seem to have figured things out this season.

Detmers returned to the rotation after a year in the bullpen last season, and has been fantastic since re-establishing himself in the rotation. He has a 3.93 ERA on the season, and has struck out 104 batters on the year. He has been lights out as of late, posting just a 2.08 ERA in June.

Soriano got off to an extremely hot start in 2026, and was one of the best pitchers in baseball throughout the first month or so of the season. He had just a 0.84 ERA through April, and is just two strikeouts shy of the century mark this year. He currently has a 3.03 ERA, which is the highest it’s been all season.

Adell hasn’t been as good as his breakout campaign last season, but he has still made a difference on offense. he has 10 homers and 41 RBIs on the year, and has a .248 batting average, which would be a career high if the season ended today. His OPS is just .680, but he has plenty of power and has shown how much damage he can do in MLB.

Should the Angels buy or sell at the deadline?
