Tim Howard thinks it's 'impossible' for USMNT to win 2026 World Cup

U.S. men's soccer legend Tim Howard doesn't believe the team's hot start to the 2026 World Cup will necessarily translate into a historic run to the finish.

In fact, Howard calls it "impossible" for the USMNT to actually win the World Cup despite winning the Group D stage to start the global tournament.

USMNT star says World Cup final run is 'not ridiculous'

On his podcast Unfiltered Soccer with fellow U.S. men's soccer legend Landon Donovan, Howard rained on the parade of optimism that the American men's team could stage an improbable run to win this year's World Cup.

"The U.S. cannot, unequivocally, win the World Cup," Howard said on his podcast. "The U.S. will have to play the greatest game they've ever played... four games in a row: round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, finals. It is literally impossible for the U.S. to win the World Cup... That's just the reality."

While nothing is necessarily impossible, the former goalkeeper knows as well as anyone how treacherous the World Cup stage can be for the American men's team. If he doesn't think it's a possibility, you do adjust your expectations.

While we're sure the USMNT will brush this off and keep trying to defy the odds, it's still a long shot for the U.S. to go the distance. Again, not impossible, but incredibly unlikely. We'll see what happens soon enough!

When is the next game?

The team will play Turkey to finish out Group D competition on Thursday at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
