Emmet Sheehan Reflects on Another Disappointing Performance

Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Emmet Sheehan has struggled throughout June, and had his worst start of the month Sunday.

The right-hander threw just 3.1 innings in the final game of the Dodgers’ series against the Baltimore Orioles, allowing six earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. The Dodgers went on to lose in a blowout, scoring just one run to the Orioles’ 12.

“Execution was really bad,” Sheehan said. “At this point, my coaches, teammates, fans all deserve better than what I’m putting out there.”

Over the course of the month, Sheehan has earned a loss in each of his four starts. His rough stretch began against the Los Angeles Angels on June 7, when he allowed two earned runs and five baserunners in just 1.1 innings, and he allowed three runs through five innings in his subsequent start against the Chicago White Sox. His most recent start was the worst of the bunch.

“He just wasn’t sharp,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “He really wasn’t. The slider wasn’t in zone. They were seeing him well. He wasn’t efficient. It was a grind for him.”

On the year, Sheehan has a 5.32 ERA through 67.2 innings pitched. He has 76 strikeouts, but has a career-high WHIP and batting average against.

Will the Dodgers Replace Emmet Sheehan in the Rotation?

Katie Woo of The Athletic says the Dodgers have no current plans to shake up their starting rotation, though they could mix things up if Sheehan continues to struggle.

The Dodgers are already without two of their key starters in Tyler Glasnow and Blake Snell, so a change in the rotation could throw things out of balance. If someone were to insert themselves into the Dodgers’ rotation, though, it would be River Ryan.

Ryan, 27, began his season in Triple-A after returning from Tommy John surgery, and has been solid in a hitter-friendly environment. Prior to his most recent start—an outlier performance during which he allowed eight runs in 4.1 innings—Ryan had a 2.81 ERA through 32 innings, as well as 40 strikeouts in that time.

Sheehan will hope Ryan doesn’t come to take his place, though, and will look to improve in his next start against the San Diego Padres next weekend.

Do you think Sheehan should stay in the Dodgers’ rotation?
