Clark would have appreciated the atmosphere at TPC River Highlands on Thursday.

It would have been like chalk and cheese for him in comparison to the US Open at Shinnecock Hills last week.

Wyndham Clark posted a two-under par 68 on day one at the Travelers Championship, and that included a triple bogey seven on the 12th hole.

The American is sitting five shots adrift of the leader with 54 holes still to play at TPC River Highlands, and we all know he is capable of going extremely low when he’s at his best.

The 32-year-old American won the US Open at Shinnecock Hills last week, but he received all sorts of abuse all week long from the fans.

Clark clearly received much more support at TPC River Highlands on Thursday than he did at Shinnecock Hills last week.

They were great, Clark said.

They were finally rooting for me instead of against me, so we like the Connecticut fans.

Yeah, it was really nice. I mean, it was definitely a nice welcoming here and just it felt a little easier and the momentum was easier than maybe last week.

After the abuse that Clark suffered at Shinnecock Hills during the US Open, this week in Cromwell, Connecticut, must be a really nice change for him.

Wyndham Clark’s verdict on his opening round at the Travelers

Clark was asked by reporters to sum up his first round on Thursday.

No, I played really good, he replied.

I mean, just really solid. I had one bad swing, made a triple, other than that we would be at 5-under and in a great spot.

So, yeah, no, I feel really pleased with my round. I felt awesome over everything, but just made one bad swing.

If Wyndham Clark cuts out the mistakes and manages to maintain his energy levels, he may well be a factor at the Travelers Championship on Sunday.
