England reach World Cup last 32 before Panama finale

England have booked their place in the World Cup knockout rounds before kicking a ball in their final group game.

Thomas Tuchel’s side are through to the last 32, with qualification confirmed ahead of Saturday’s clash with Panama.

The maths fell kindly. England sit on four points after two matches, guaranteeing them at least one of the eight third-placed qualifying spots. Uruguay’s defeat by Spain was the result that sealed their progress.

It has been a mixed campaign so far. England opened with a thrilling 4-2 win over Croatia before being held to a goalless draw by Ghana. A victory on Saturday would secure top spot in Group L and a smoother knockout path.

There is a notable injury blow, however. Tuchel has confirmed Reece James will miss the Panama game and is expected to be out for at least two matches. The Chelsea full-back suffered a hamstring problem against Ghana and did not travel to New Jersey.

“Reecey has a minor hamstring issue,” Tuchel said. “He’s now on an accelerated recovery programme, but we strongly believe that he will be able to play for us again in the tournament.”

There was better news elsewhere. Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson both picked up minor knocks against Ghana but returned to full training on Friday. Tuchel confirmed everyone except James is available.

The right-back position is now a concern. With Tino Livramento already lost to a tournament-ending calf injury, Tuchel may turn to Ezri Konsa or Jarell Quansah against Panama.

The German hinted at rotation, too. “I am not shy to do some rotation now,” he said, though he warned against wholesale changes. Rice is also one booking from a suspension.
